As some of you may remember, I'm a recovering Lost fan. (And by that I mean that they killed off too many women for "shock value", and I dropped that show like a rotten, stinking potato. Even though Jack, Desmond & Sayid are hot. ;)
Anyway, one of the cutesy things that Lost likes to do is plant these little Easter Eggs within the show for fans to find. I posted a couple of the Easter Eggs from Roslin's Opera House vision (Crossroads II version) over in the comments of
frolicndetour 's journal and was surprised that people weren't familiar with them. (I guess BSG fans fail at Easter Egg hunts. ;)
So here they are.

(I like to think that's glowey Chief standing behind Sharon, but that's just the old Chief/Boomer shipper in me. ;) (But actually, it looks more like Casper the Friendly Ghost...)
And of course, more recently, there is this little gem from Faith.

(This is the prow of the boat that Laura and Emily were standing on during their dream sequence from Faith. Those are the probable numbers of Saul, Sam, Galen & Tory. Although in what order, we don't yet know.)
So - Where am I going with all this? Why more FF wank, of course, (hangs head in shame) featuring more pictures and Gaeta's Lament. (I know I said that I was done with FF wanking, but evidently I can't resist...)
Yes, I know that trying to guess the Last Cylon is truly just a guess. Especially since I don't particularly expect Ron to follow his own plan. ;)
Let's start by going back to this famous image from Crossroads II:

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The human eye knows the difference between the shape of a man vs. the shape of a woman. And there are two female figures in this picture, including the one in the middle. (The other woman, presumably Tory, is on her right, the smallest of the five figures.)
We already know who four of these figures are supposed to represent, right? We know that Chief is stout and Sam is tall, and Tory is petite and Saul stands with a very straight posture. So, I'll go so far as to say that from left to right we're looking at:
Galen (a stout man)
Sam (a tall man)
Unknown Female (a woman of average size)
Tory (a petite woman)
Saul (a man standing with straight posture)
I think that all of that actually fits very, very well.
*****
That brings me to another picture. This is one of D'Anna's sketches glimpsed briefly during Baltar's dream in EOJ.

I think that by the time they were editing EOJ, they hopefully knew who the FF were. (And I'll give another piece of evidence for that a little later.) But assuming that the male in the upper left, with the giant eye projecting out of his ear, is Baltar, (because he sure looks like Baltar) it then follows that the other five are the Four + One.
Given that then:
The veiled woman in the upper left looks most like Tory. And the three male figures from left to right are Tigh, Tyrol and Anders. (And the two screaming men actually do look like Tyrol and Anders, though the one left for Tigh is kind of stretching it.)
This leaves the last figure, the woman in the top center who looks like she's a nun lying in repose. Actually, with the cross drawn on her forehead, and with her hands crossed over her chest, I think that particular figure has an air of death about it (Dying Leader? or, maybe a character that already died?). Or alternately, perhaps it is a suggestion of deeper sleep then the other four. (Which, of course, conveniently fits.)
Again, it appears to be three men and two women.
As an aside, there is lots of eye and ear imagry in this picture, and associated with the FF in general.

Here's another of D'Anna's sketches glimpsed in The Passage and EOJ

This one is totally amusing because the main figure in the upper part of the drawing has to be Tigh, complete with the missing eye. And the other eye is marked with a big giant "T". Heh. (And also, again with the screaming. Poor fellow.)
I know that none of this actually means anything, what with the lack of a plan and all. But still, I think that as of Crossroads II, at least the Editors and CGI people were counting on the Fifth being female. ;)
*****
Which finally brings me to Gaeta's Lament:

Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man
With my three wishes tucked in her hand.
The First that she be spared the pain
That comes from a dark and laughing rain (reign).
When she finds love, may it always stay true
This I wish for the second wish I made too.
But wish no more, my life you can take,
To have her please, just one day wake
To have her please, just one day wake.
*****
Talk about layered meanings here.
My first impression at the time this episode aired was that the song was about D'Anna. There is certainly a lot of plot set up revolving around the waking of D'Anna, and discussion of her in the last two episodes. The song even specifically uses the number Three in the lyrics. So, my initial take was that the "she" in the song was D'Anna. "To have her please just one day wake"
But Bear McCreary brought up in his blog that the specific timing of the song coincides with the waking of the Hybrid. So that is a second meaning as well.
But... That opening lyric, "Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man"... Is quite interesting to me, as it could be describing the last (alone) sleeper (in the shirt of mankind) waiting to awaken. I would also like to point out, that although the lyrics as written on Bear's blog are "dark and laughing rain" -- the lyric that appears on my close caption is "dark and laughing reign", which is actually a much more interesting word, and more descriptive of the state of humanity on BSG.

Which, all of this or course, totally validates my blind guess that the last is Laura, or at the very least, female. ;) Heh.

Here are a couple of other images people like to reference when engaging in FF Wank.

Since these are clearly stand-in actors, I've never felt that there was much to this particular photo. Although, it too seems to suggest three men and two women. Trying to figure out who's who, though, would lead you to the conclusion that the person D'Anna spoke to, which was the one farthest on the right, is Tyrol! And I don't think that D'Anna apologized to Tyrol.

This one is used a lot for people trying to guess the Five. But I don't think any of these faces are clear enough to identify anyone, even knowing who four of them are supposed to be. That one in the middle could vaguely be Tory. And the one farthest to the right could vaguely be Anders. But I don't see anyone that looks like Tyrol or Tigh. I think the most interesting thing about this picture is trying to figure out the meaning of the crowd of people gathered around them. Because that's an interesting question too. :D
I'm sure that this was mostly useless, but I enjoyed writing it and putting it together. So, mission accomplished.
I think I'll leave with one last Easter Egg, From Six of One:

The Constellation Orion. (And also, more difficult to see in the picture, but you can make out nearby Taurus as well. )

It mostly holds with your L-R scheme from the balcony - Tyrol, Anders, some woman, another woman, and another man (which, by elimination, must be Saul). Tory's not exactly short, so she belongs, as you point out with the balcony pic, second from the right. This still leaves some random chick in the middle, next to Anders, who appears to be fairly short.
*shrugs* I don't know, but it's fun to think about. XD
Tory is quite petite actually. She's definetly shorter then Laura, who I'd guess is 5'5" or 5'6".
It is fun stuff to think about. Hence my inablity to stop even when I vow to. ;)
They definitely do make it look like the 5th is a woman, though. Though the way she's lying makes me think it's someone who's already died, and that works with the sleeping/waking imagery from the song too.
And I agree, that woman does fit with the sleeping/waking imagery from the song. (Although, I don't exactly envision Ellen with a cross drawn on her forehead. Hehe.)
You know what? Again, possibly pure coincidence, but my first thought on looking at the very first drawing, after reading up to that point, was "Wow, that [chick with her eyes closed and her hands crossed over her chest like she's dead] looks like Laura!"
But i still can't see her as the Final Cylon, because all about every FF being near one of the important people of the fleet, could't have any sense, unless it was to protect her. And the fact that she sees the FF at the Opera House, and that she's the Dying Leader... i don't know, it's like everything is a pro and a con, at the same time.
Anyway, cool entry, i didn't see the easter eggs till now, and i always love the way you write this kind of entries :)
And good point. Laura would presumably be number 7, which makes it cool that she's on the boat, and the other four's numbers are on the prow.
I agree with you that Dee would be a great choice for the Fifth. Although, I have trouble then figuring out why it is that she wasn't activated with the other four.
Of course, I pretty much ignored Ron's statement that the Fifth isn't in the Last Supper picture. Dee fits with that far more then Laura does.
And, in the last episode, the fact that she showed up some times along the corridors when in previous episodes we hadn't seen her... i don't know, that Athena asked her for her daughter... i found it some kind of weird, like she's always where something important happens. But it's only a gut feeling :P
as for the 2nd-to-last picture, the figure farthest to the left looks *very* much like Kara!! with the hair, cheek-bones structure and the eyes!!
I hope that the Chief does end up being 12. :D
Laura works for me because there is, at least with her, a compelling reason why she wouldn't have been activated at the same time as the others. She still has business to take care of as the Dying Leader which she probably couldn't do if she were also angsting with the other four about their Cylonhood.
Thanks once again for bringing me up to speed!
Thanks!
(Easter eggs make me think of DVD surprises, not the actual show that's aired.)
Also, Orion--woohoo! That's just awesome.
I really love the drawings too. :D
That orion pic took my breath away. What a whopper! Wouldn't that in theory mean they are really close to Earth? I mean, it would be distorted otherwise, right? But then, I'm not sure RDM would go through so much trouble researching that...
And thanks for transcript of Gaeta's song. Though how could he possibly sing about a cylon unless he himself is one ? How would he come by a prophecy of sorts?
*shudders at implications*
I really hope the final Cylon is a woman. I'd been hoping for 6 men and 6 women, as BSG seems to do female equality so well, on the whole. Then it became apparent that this was not the case, but I suppose that would have made it easier to guess the final one...
