Happy New Year

She Love You
Happy New Year guys!    I just got this meme from [info]on_the_ground , and I thought I'd run with it.  It concerns TV fandoms.  Of which I have too many, though fortunately, only one, BSG, that I am intense about.   I am not really planning on ever getting that intense about a TV show again.

* Part of the TV of 2008 meme made by </a></b></a>[info]schneefloeckli.

++ What fandoms did you acquire in 2008?
Leverage, Primeval, Avatar: The Last Airbender (fortunately I caught it at the end, because that fandom is WANKY!)  Sarah Connor Chronicles (tentatively)

++ What fandoms did you let go of in 2008?
I am letting go of Heroes, even though it's still technically on my DVR, I so totally don't care.

++ What fandoms did you mean to get into but didn't in 2008? Why?
I flirted with Legend of the Seeker and Crusoe.  But both of them turned out to be lame.  Although Legend of the Seeker is still on the DVR.   I never actually watched most of the so called Sci-fi shows that turned up on network TV this year such as Fringe or the Mentalist.  I also tried out Sanctuary, which I'm currently only watching to spot the familiar faces such as Rekha Sharma, Ryan Robbins and Jim Byrnes.

++ What fandoms do you intend on checking out in 2009?
Dollhouse for certain, though (ducking incoming) I actually think it sounds lame, and am doing so only for Tahmoh.  Merlin, if it ever shows up on NBC.  Caprica, alas, doesn't start until 2010, but I am very excited about it after reading the script.  I am looking forward to watching a couple of comedies that currently conflict with my favorite shows.  Big Bang Theory & How I Met Your Mother (which conflict with Chuck), and 30 Rock which conflicts with Supernatural.  I am hoping that those shows get rerun in the Summer, so I can catch up with them then.

++ What show impressed you least in 2008?
All network attempts at Genre.  They crash and burn for a reason.  Seriously, I think that TV genre shows need to keep their premise as simple as possible.  BSG is a show with a very simple plot about survival.  It is the performances and the nuance of writing that elevate it to something great, and of course there are complications - but the mission of the show is to portray the stuggle of the human race to survive in the face of catastrophe.  It's not that complicated.  Star Trek was a show, at it's core, with a very simple premise about exploration:  "Boldly go where no one has gone before."  Star Wars is the story of a boy, a girl and a rebellion.   Terminator - Fight Evil Robots From The Future.  Stop Armageddon from happening.   These are the kinds of shows that work.  Seriously, if you can't explain the premise easily, don't even bother.  Just exactly what was that show with Christian Slater about anyway?  This is why I fear for Dollhouse.  The premise is convoluted to the point of nearly being inaccessible.

++ What fandoms do you think you might let go of in 2009 unless things significantly improve?
Heroes - because I don't think it's salvagable.   But fortunately, I don't care that much about it, which is why it's still on my DVR.  It's not like when I had to go through a titanic struggle to allow myself to let go of Lost.

++ What fandoms do you think you'll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?

BSG (I don't think it will every get crappy - though I do expect to reinvent my own closing canon to suit myself when all is said in done.  People who die in canon, will live in mine.  And Final Five Cylons will have copies, and they will do naked Tai Chi on base stars.  ;)

Chuck (It will also never get crappy.  It's premise is too goofy.  It's a show with a lot of heart and a very solid core with Chuck and Sarah, major support from Casey, Morgan, Ellie & Awesome, Anna & the Buy More employees.  It's a great ensemble, but with special recognition to Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin.)

Supernatural (Because I always underestimate it.  I get close to dismissing it, and it ropes me in again.  There is actually a little more to it then just the hotness of the two boys.  Not much more is needed then that actually, because those two boys are freaking hot.  But they have built an increasingly solid mythology.  But the show does need stronger, and more, female characters.  Sorry fangirls, but it does.)

Mad Men (It's the '60's.  They have great characters, played by great actors, written by great writers.  And it's the 60's.)

Survivor & The Amazing Race (ducking incoming)

Cincinnati and Chicago sports teams.  Because having your heart ripped out annually is FUN!  Give me more, baby!   ;)

Is it time for my annual Anti-American Idol rant yet?  Or do I get to give it another week or two?

I am letting go of Heroes,

Yeah...me too.
I feel like they are trying so hard to make up for how bad season 2 was that season 3 is failing. I watch still, mostly because it's 1 hour my kids leave me alone a week. Toad knows that Monday night "Mom's scary show" is on. :)
